To be the best skater, you must find your flow...
Introducing Flow Skate, a fast-paced 3D platformer with gameplay inspired by Sonic R (yes, that one) and Kirby Air Ride, with a sharp cel-shaded aesthetic.
In the City of Skates, every year skaters from all over the world (and beyond, potentially) are called to compete in a massive racing and obstacle course competition that tests their wheel-spinning abilities.
Two such skaters are...
Jet
Jet is a self-proclaimed "Flow Skater" and has dreamed his entire life to enter the City of Skates racing tournament. He claims to be the coolest guy around, but his constant smug attitude often leaves other skaters annoyed by his antics and attempts at showing off. Regardless, his roller skating abilities are unmatched, and his top-of-the-line skates offer perfectly balanced stats that are easy to handle and allow for decent navigation around a variety of situations.
Blink
Blink is a rockin' octopus from far off the coast of the City of Skates, with a love for music and living life in the moment. They heard about the racing tournament from a flyer in their hometown, and decided to join in hopes of using the prize money to jump-start their music career. Instead of using roller skates (Most shoes don't come in sizes fit for tentacles), they use a modified surf-skateboard built by a friend, which is slow normally but can reach way high speeds if you chain together drift boosts.
Stages
Keep in mind while playing that the stage in this demo is not indicative of how the levels will be designed in the future, and rather the next demo (whenever that may be) will feature a completely different direction on level design.
Cyber Ocean
Within this vaporwave-like digital realm, skaters will travel across glowing blue platforms and grind across rails to reach the goal. Watch out for bumpy terrain and split routes, and try to reach the goal as fast as possible!
City of Skates (Hub area)
Between runs in Cyber Ocean, you can explore a (very early) small version of City of Skates to practice the controls and mess around with different gimmick objects. Go to the sign-up stand near the Cyber Ocean entrance to swap characters!
Known Bugs
">
Because this is a very early build, there's gonna be some stuff that doesn't work. These are the bugs I'm already aware of, but feel free to let me know in the comments if there's any more you discover.
- Rails are really janky. I kind of fumbled my way to the current rail grinding code and it MOSTLY works, but right now they're really finicky with which direction you approach them at and sometimes jumping onto the end of a rail gets you stuck in place. Jump to escape that state since jumping cancels out rails entirely.
- If you're in the "launched" animation from a dash panel or dash ring, you'll clip through any other dash object. This is technically intended behavior since there was a worse bug that forced the player to be stuck on a dash object indefinitely, but it can still cause some weirdness near the end of Cyber Ocean.
- Jumping off steep enough ramps puts you back in running state. This leads to a bug where if you jump while moving up a steep enough ramp the ground detection will re-trigger and you'll not only get a height boost from the ramp (intended behavior) but also be put back into the state that allows you to jump (unintended behavior).
